Happy Pride Month, Soul Fam!
I want to celebrate all of the beautiful LGBTQ+ souls in this community and everywhere. We stand with you, rebelling FOR the right to be seen, heard, and recognized as equal. Thank you for modeling that authenticity is the truest form of rebellion. And that our soul’s truth is eminently more technicolor than the black+ white boxes into which the world so often tries to force us.
The rainbow flag is a powerful symbol of pride – and everything it means to be a rebel soul. It is brave, bold, and badass. A reminder for ALL of us to:
Live our truth.
Flip the middle finger to life on someone else’s terms.
Never forget that we are the torches of truth, ripples of inspiration, and pioneers who “brave it forward” (as Lindsay Stein taught us). So please recommit to waving your flag, taking up space, and holding the door wide open for the soul sisters and brothers right behind you. This month and every month.
I know I am. I’m putting the Rebel back in Rebel Souls with the relaunch of the podcast on Wednesday, June 16th. (Subscribe on your favorite pod platform so you don’t miss it!) I’ll be pushing the needle on the badass barometer with new artwork, music, guests, rebel swag giveaways, soul sister episodes with Laurie (my Chief Wing Woman), and more soul shares from yours truly. The first episode is a raw re-introduction to who I’m becoming as I continue to challenge myself to stop playing it safe and small; to remove any remaining shackles of should that were holding me back for fear of alienating big companies who might hire me (well, the more politically correct version of me). I’m taking Oprah’s words to heart: “Just be so good they can’t take their eyes off of you.”
Bottom line: let’s all be so fucking good the world can’t take their eyes off of our loud, proud, gay, straight, trans, bi, fluid, technicolor rebel fabulousness, Soul Fam. *Steps off soapbox* And now for your monthly dose of soul fuel…
WHO OR WHAT IS INTRIGUING ME AT THE MOMENT
Most of you know that I’m passionate about mental health – advocating for it, talking about it, and removing any stigma surrounding it. I’ve been in that darkness before – depressed, suicidal, and afraid to ask for help. Feeling hopeless and alone. Attempting to take my own life instead of taking someone else’s hand. No more.
If you have Apple+, or know anyone who does, please watch “The Me You Can’t See”, executive produced by Oprah and Prince Harry. The series shines a profound spotlight on very real struggles with mental health from well-known public figures like Lady Gaga to my new heroes Hussain Manawer, poet and mental health activist, and Dr. Dixon Chibanda, psychologist and founder of Friendship Bench, a pioneering program in Zimbabwe that trains local grandmothers to treat depression in their under-served communities. If you don’t already have goosebumps – and even if you do – check out his TED talk here. I dare you not to cry (and then want to take action). Huge gratitude for the reminder that we are not alone and that the mental health conversation is an urgent public health conversation (and global crisis).
Also, a heartfelt shout out to Naomi Osaka who, as I was writing this newsletter, made the decision to pull out of the French Open tennis tournament to focus on her mental health. She may not know it (yet), but she’s living Soulbbatical. A badass example of what we call Radical Self Commitment — the courageous choice to honor yourself (and your mental/physical/soul health) over what the world says you “should” be doing. Being willing to disappoint others in service of your values (over validation), boundaries (over burnout), and permission to be/do/not do/feel whatever you need in that moment (over pleasing). Bravo, Naomi. Thank you for being a Soul Model for all of us.
WHAT’S GOT MY ORANGE HIGHLIGHTER IN OVERDRIVE
Ask for More: 10 Questions to Negotiate Anything by Alexandra Carter. Alex is a badass – she’s a world-renowned negotiation trainer to the United Nations, Fortune 100 execs, US and foreign governments, and a professor of mediation at Columbia Law School.
This book is so sneaky powerful, you guys. It’s part business (as expected) and part deeply reflective personal development (didn’t see that coming). Who knew that the best negotiators in the world are, first and foremost, in touch with their own worth and needs?! On second thought, of course they are. How can we possibly be clear on our non-negotiables if we don’t start by looking in the mirror, i.e., deep into our soul?
Alex teaches us to be the ultimate self-advocate. Her approach has profoundly shifted how I show up in negotiations with companies, especially around keynote speaking. In fact, I just said a graceful no to one of the biggest tech companies in the world – a brand that would have given me serious street cred as a speaker – because they refused to meet my minimum requirements for an even exchange of energy. Alex helped me get clear that what I really wanted was well beyond a monetary fee. I wanted a bulk book buy (to liberate more souls), video footage of my talk (to use for promotion on my website and socials), and a branded testimonial (to give other companies/conferences the confidence to hire me). As scary as it felt, walking away was a commitment to my self-worth and values.
If you’re not yet ready to dive into the book, do yourself a favor and check out Alex’s generous free downloads here. You’re welcome for all the integrous wins coming your way.
WHO/WHAT/WHERE IS GIVING ME ROCKET FUEL
Lollapalooza, one of the world’s biggest live music festivals, is on again this summer. Pride parades are in the works. Airport security lines and packed airplanes are back. Retail stores are mask-optional for the vaccinated. And companies are starting to invite employees back to the office IRL. At least that’s the case in the US. (Sending big soul hugs to my friends in Canada, India, and other countries who are still on lockdown. Please reach out if you need a virtual Friendship Bench.)
For me, personally, the Great Reopening is bringing up all the feels. I’m excited and hesitant; realizing that I’m even more discerning about who and what I leave the house for these days. Honestly, I’m confused about the rules of gathering, who to hug, and what feels comfortable. If you’re experiencing the same, have a listen to this wildly insightful conversation between Brené Brown and Priya Parker, author of The Art of Gathering, on the Dare to Lead podcast (Spotify). The episode is called “How We Return and Why it Matters, Part 1 of 2”.
And I highly recommend Priya’s new e-book, The New Rules of Gathering, as inspiration when you decide to start hosting again. I love how she describes it: “…five rules to help you rethink what your casual parties and special occasions should look like to what they could look like.” Yup, another invitation to drop the shoulds. Amen and happy gathering.
PODCAST EPISODES, VIDEOS, OR WORDS OF WISDOM
FROM MY TRIBE
I’m a sucker for Alicia Keys ANYTHING. In fact, when I can afford the royalties, her tune “Underdog” will become the Rebel Souls podcast theme song. Unless she wants to pen a new original inspired by this community after we become besties one day. Just putting it out there. (You listening, Universe?)
Until that magic happens – or at least for the next 21 days – you’ll find me hanging virtually with Alicia and Deepak Chopra. They’ve partnered on a soulful new 21-Day Meditation Experience, Activating the Divine Feminine: The Path to Wholeness. It invites us to explore the healing power of the Divine Feminine and bring wholeness to our lives and the world around us. I can’t think of a more profound moment in time for this healing. Soul x Infinite.
I’m here for each and every one of you. Shoot me an email and let me know what lit your soul on fire, what shifted your perspective for the weeks or months ahead, and/or how I can support you in any way. And, if you’ve read Soulbbatical or listened to Rebel Souls, I’d be so grateful for a review on Amazon, Goodreads, or your favorite pod platform. Reviews are a vote of confidence that encourage kindred souls to make the leap!
And don’t be shy. If you love what you’re reading in this newsletter, please share it with friends, family, clients, and colleagues who need a little more Soul Fuel in their lives. I mean, in this day and age, don’t we all?
Stay bold, brave and badass, my friends. I appreciate you all.
