Just Show Up in Soul F.U.E.L. v12

Happy Labor Day to those of you in the U.S.! As sad as it feels to say goodbye to a Summer that never really happened (cue sad trombone sound), I’m not resisting it because we’re now rolling into my favorite time of year. I am madly in love with Fall for so many reasons—sweaters, boots, butternut squash soup, and Mother Nature painting with my favorite colors (orange everywhere!). It’s the season of harvest and abundance; a time of year when we honor the harvest of our efforts and intentions and activate our new cycle of growth.

It’s also the marker of a very special anniversary for me.

Four years ago, on September 2, 2016, I walked away from Harley-Davidson to become Chief Soul Officer of my own life. I chose myself, my truth, and my infinite possibility. I dared to imagine what it could mean for Shelley Paxton to be the most iconic brand I could ever represent. And I discovered the power of rebelling FOR who I am, what I want, and the massive impact I can have in this world. Who would have thought that one courageous step across a threshold could lead to a mission, a business, a book, a podcast, a tribe, and a life that lights me up from the inside out? And to think this is only the beginning.

I’m beyond grateful for the support and encouragement of this community. From my soul to yours, thank you a billion times over.  I want nothing more than for every one of us to feel wildly fulfilled and make a fucking difference in this world.

Cheers to making that happen. Together.

And now for a little Soul Fuel to get us all fired up…

fascinating

WHO OR WHAT IS INTRIGUING ME AT THE MOMENT

What’s intriguing me is my friend Mark Silverman’s brilliant system of “Only 10s.” It’s a transformational life management system masquerading as a time and attention management tool. It’s a powerful (and uncomfortable) reminder that most of us don’t have a time management problem at all. We have an honesty problem…and a focus problem…and a boundaries problem…and a willingness to speak up problem. So often we aren’t taking responsibility for everything that’s happening in our lives — we choose to believe that we are a victim of circumstance instead of the owner of our life. Only 10s is a wake-up call to get honest with ourselves and those around us. To do the deep self-inquiry and self-reflection that will help us live more intentionally, focused on what matters most to us (The 10s).

Can anyone else relate? This is blowing my mind and showing up in my life just when I need it the most (as always). I keep finding myself trapped in the busy-ness of my own creation. Saying yes when I should be saying no to things that are really 7s, 8s, and 9s. One of the many gut-punch truths that Mark reveals is this: “You’re too busy because it feels easier than choosing what is important.” Ouch. The truth hurts. And that’s only the beginning of realizing that our relationship with time is actually about our relationship with ourselves.

Mark’s original book Only 10s: Using Distraction to Get the Right Things Done was published in 2015. On September 15th, he’s releasing a completely updated version called Only 10s 2.0 with more insights, truths, and worksheets to help us really dig into the work (and our lives). The new book is not yet available for pre-order as we hit send on this newsletter. You can buy it on Amazon when it releases on the 15th OR wait for the October Soul F.U.E.L. newsletter when we’ll have a special bonus just for you guys. Stay tuned.

WHAT’S GOT MY ORANGE HIGHLIGHTER IN OVERDRIVE

I’m really honored to know so many talented people who are putting amazing work out in the world. The latest is hyphenated husband and wife power couple, David and Elaine Taylor-Klaus, whose book babies arrived in the world a few days ago. It was never their intention to launch the books simultaneously, but the Universe (and COVID-19) had other plans. Lucky us because we get to add two important reads to our Fall book stacks. My copies arrived yesterday!

Mindset Mondays with DTK: 52 Ways to Rewire Your Thinking and Transform Your Life by David Taylor-Klaus
I was one of the lucky few who got to read an advance copy of the book and here’s exactly what I sent back to David to use as an endorsement: “I started with the intention of skimming Mindset Mondays and got sucked in from chapter one! While the book is designed to cherry pick lessons that resonate most with you, I dare you not to find value on every single page. I’m a former executive, now transformational coach and personal development geek who walked away with fresh perspective, new tools, and some much-needed reminders. You will too. Guaranteed. David’s book is like a modern-day Encyclopedia Britannica for mindset mastery. I’m gifting this to every one of my clients for sure.”

The Essential Guide to Raising Complex Kids with ADHD, Anxiety and More: What Parents Need to Know to Empower Complicated Kids with Confidence and Calm by Elaine Taylor-Klaus
It’s already an Amazon #1 Bestseller! Elaine is a renowned expert on helping parents with complex kids. She’s the founder of Impact Parents and a prolific writer on the topic. I’m not a parent, but I am a big believer in Elaine’s work. This book couldn’t come at a better time with the pandemic adding to the pressures of parenting. I wanted every parent in this community to know that this phenomenal resource is now available.

WHO/WHAT/WHERE IS GIVING ME ROCKET FUEL

I’m experiencing the kind of momentum that only comes from fully owning your purpose and showing up in service of it every single day. In the words of Chadwick Boseman, from his Howard University Commencement address in 2018, “Purpose is an essential element of you. It is the reason you are on the planet at this particular time in history. Your very existence is wrapped up in the things you are here to fulfill. Whatever you choose for a career path, remember, the struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.” I highly recommend watching the entire address. (RIP Chadwick, you wise and beautiful soul.)

My mission to liberate a billion souls is starting to generate ripples of impact — and I believe that this is only the beginning. I’m sharing three of the most recent ripples below. Not to brag (though, as my coach says, “it’s not bragging if it’s true”), but to share what’s possible for every one of us when we live into our truth. The reward outweighs the risk ALL DAY LONG. Just a little reminder, my friends.

  • My book is being hand-delivered to Arianna Huffington this month. Arianna Freaking Huffington!!! I have no words. Only immense gratitude for the kindred soul who reached out to me because he saw an excerpt of Soulbbatical on Thrive Global (Arianna’s company for which he sits on the Board of Directors), read the book, and came to meet me. He understands the powerful synergy between Arianna’s work and mine and wants to connect the two of us. I’m stating the intention that she and I will meet and collaborate in some way. (Thanks for holding that intention for me, Soul Fam.) And, in case you missed the excerpt on Thrive Global, here it is.
  • I got my first feature in Inc. magazine last Friday! That’s kind of a big deal in the business world so I feel legit, you guys. And I love that they chose to focus on the principles of Rebel Leadership that I’ve been preaching since the start of the pandemic. Have a read and let me know what you think.
  • Soulbbatical x LMU. Soulbbatical is going to be a project for a group of graduate students at Loyola Marymount University in L.A. this semester! The students are reading my book and then advising us on how they would market the Soulbbatical concept to the business world, i.e. bring it into companies as a fundamentally different way of doing business and caring for employees. I’m super excited to hear their ideas.

PODCAST EPISODES, VIDEOS, OR WORDS OF WISDOM
FROM MY TRIBE

I’m addicted to a new social podcasting app called Goodpods. It allows you to follow your favorite people (celebs, experts, and friends) so you can see what podcasts they’re listening to and recommending. It’s genius! So far, I’ve found two new ones that I love: Smartless with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett (how did I not know about this until now?!) and Back to Biz with Katie (Couric) and Boz (Bozoma St. John). Sign up, follow me, and let’s start sharing our faves with each other. My handle is @rebelsouls (of course). By the way, if you’re loving Rebel Souls (my podcast), this is a great way to spread the word with your peeps!

And, because I love you all, this is a heads up that Season 2 of Unlocking Us with Brené Brown started up last week! You’re welcome.

I’m here for each and every one of you. Shoot me an email and let me know what lit your soul on fire, what shifted your perspective for the weeks or months ahead, or how I can support you in any way.

And don’t be shy. If you love what you’re reading, share it with friends, family, clients, and colleagues who need a little more Soul Fuel in their lives. I mean, in this day and age, don’t we all?

Stay safe and soul-full my friends. And please do whatever you can to make a difference in whatever part of the country or world you’re in. Lots of love.
