Hey Soul Fam,
It’s the first anniversary of Soul F.U.E.L. this month! I can’t believe it’s been a year – and what a helluva year it’s been. Hugeshout-out to those of you who’ve been with me from the beginning. I’m humbled that our little family has blossomed into a soulful community.Thank you all for showing up every month and giving yourselves, and your beautiful souls, this sacred space to be and breathe.
Speakingof breathing, pause, close your eyes, and take five deep breaths. Imagine yourself inhaling positivity, kindness, and the dynamic energy of change, and exhaling negativity, toxicity, and the stale energy of the status quo. Inhale for five counts…hold for five counts…exhale for five counts. Repeat four more times, slowly and intentionally, before opening your eyes again.
As my friend Mandy would say, “Did that drop your shoulders a few inches?” Good. Settle in.
Witheverything going on in the world right now, we can’t forget to breathe. I’m talking about the kind of deep, centering breaths that relax our nervous systems, fuel our bodies, and enable us to access our highest selves. The kind that strengthen us, and boost our resilience, for the big work we have ahead of us; for the change that we are BEing.
On that note, I just received my official mail-in election ballot. For those of you in the U.S., please register to VOTE and make your voice heard on (or before) November 3rd! Time to channel our RBG.
And now back to our regularly scheduled program…chock full of perspective, positivity, kindness and a swift kick in the self-care pants. Because this is what we’re being called to model, my friends.
WHO OR WHAT IS INTRIGUING ME AT THE MOMENT
Remember last month I talked about my friend Mark Silverman’s brilliant system of Only 10s? The transformational life management system masquerading as a time and attention management tool with which I’ve become completely obsessed. Well, his new book, Only 10s 2.0: Confront Your To Do List and Transform Your Life, is finally out in the wild and selling like hotcakes. But, that’s not even the best part.
I promised you all a special bonus – and Mark delivered in spades. He’s created free content and opportunities on his website, exclusively for this community. How lucky are we?! Click here and you’ll get access to short videos on each of the 10 Truths he highlights in the book; a free download of the 10 Truths chapter in the new book; and, free access to his Only 10s online course. The password is “rebel” (of course).
And, if you’re really grooving on this concept of becoming less obligated and more committed, have a listen to my latest Rebel Souls SOULisode called Rebelling FOR The Big Rocks. I talk very openly about my struggles with busy-ness and what I’m doing to re-focus on what matters (i.e. impact). I even came up with my own “Lens for 10s” filters. (Yeah, I’m feeling pretty proud of myself for that one.)
WHAT’S GOT MY ORANGE HIGHLIGHTER IN OVERDRIVE
I want to share three books — written by heart-led humans — that are rocking my world. All of them are beautifully aligned with what I believe we need more of in the world, and our lives, right now: positivity, kindness, and resilience. Feels like the soul fuel we need to drive change.
Uplifting Stories: True Tales to Inspire You to Take Action by Ione Butler. Ione is a new friend, fellow Tiller Press/Simon & Schuster author, and actress. She’s also the founder of Uplifting Content (also on Instagram and Facebook), a positivity platform with nearly 1.5M followers. Her book is a continuation of the light she’s putting into the world – a collection of inspirational narratives (including her own) that will shift your perspective and restore your faith in humanity. Not only did I get to read an advance copy of Uplifting Stories, I got the chance to interview Ione on Rebel Souls! Our conversation drops on October 5th (tomorrow). Subscribe on your favorite pod platform and the episode will magically appear in your library OR click here tomorrow and you’ll see Ione Butler Rebelling FOR Positivity. It’s a must-listen (or watch!).
Deep Kindness: A Revolutionary Guide for How We Think, Talk, and Act in Kindness by Houston Kraft. Houston is another new friend, fellow Tiller Press/Simon & Schuster author, and awesome advocate for change. He’s the founder of Character Strong which trains educators and students on character development and social and emotional learning. And now he’s on a mission to spread kindness in the world (when we need it the most).
For his book launch on September 29th, Houston hosted an epic 13-hour Kindness Conversations Conference (KCC) to talk with influencers, artists, and entrepreneurs about the intersection of kindness with their work. Yours truly was invited to sprinkle some rebel wisdom into the mix. I’m so honored to have been sharing space with heavy hitters like Justin Baldoni, Yes Theory, and my soul brother Cornell Thomas. If you need a mainline hit of inspo, look no further. The KCC video segments are posted here. (Psst…be on the lookout for a Rebel Souls episode with Houston in December! You heard it here first.)
Undaunted: Overcoming Doubts and Doubters by Kara Goldin, Founder and CEO of Hint Water. Kara is an old friend from the AOL days who calls herself an accidental entrepreneur because her personal mission to get healthy and fall in love with water again led her to her higher purpose: to create Hint Water and ultimately a multi-million dollar company that helps people fall in love with healthy choices (from water to sunscreen to deodorant). Undaunted is the story of how she and her husband built Hint in the face of fears, challenges, and a whole lot of doubters. The lessons are as applicable to life as they are to business.
The book doesn’t launch until October 20th, but I got to read (er, totally binge) an advance copy before Kara joined me for a deeply insightful and inspiring conversation on Rebel Souls. The episode will drop on October 19th. In the meantime, you can pre-order the book and receive a free case of Hint Water.
Full disclosure: I’m completely addicted to Hint Water. Blackberry is my favorite flavor, followed closely by Watermelon. (And, no, this is not a paid endorsement.)
WHO/WHAT/WHERE IS GIVING ME ROCKET FUEL
I’m experiencing a deep desire to recalibrate my mental, physical, and soul health — especially after these many months of COVID cravings, social unrest, and political insanity. My body has been keeping score and, as a result, my energy and clarity have been suffering, and the numbers on the scale climbing. Anyone else feeling this 6-month slump/slide? (FWIW: I’m convinced that this also has to do with our “surge capacity” being depleted. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, read this article now. It’ll blow your mind and serve as a powerful reminder for how important radical self-care is in trying times.)
So, I’m diving into a month long experiment with an entirely organic, gluten-free, plant-based diet alongside a commitment to refresh my routine and reset my soul goals. After hearing amazing reviews from people I trust, I signed up for Sakara’s 3-week RE:PROGRAM. I’ll be receiving delicious, fully prepped meals 5-days a week, clean products, and daily soul/mindset guidance. I think this is exactly the reboot I need before heading down to Modern Elder Academy for a mini-Soulbbatical starting November 1st.
And, while wine is thankfully plant-based (phew!), I’ve re-committed to savoring it only on the weekends. I’m already a few weeks into this part of the plan and feeling a surge in clarity and energy. Not to mention processing some REALLY BIG feelings that I was previously trying to numb. Like my deep and tender desire for a sacred life partnership. (More on that to come…)
Now excuse me while I scarf down the rest of the keto-friendly salami and cheese in my refrigerator. I would hate to see it go to waste. 😉
PODCAST EPISODES, VIDEOS, OR WORDS OF WISDOM
FROM MY TRIBE
Yeah, I’m pretty much stuck on the same positivity playlist. Because all the things. Here are a few of my favorite podcast episodes as of late:
Marie Forleo and Dr. Edith Eger, a holocaust survivor, on seeing the gift in everything. Sooooo freaking inspiring. Listening to this woman will shift your entire worldview. I’ve already ordered Dr. Eger’s new book, The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life.
Goop and Dr. Kristin Neff on the impact of practicing self-compassion every day. ‘Nuf said.
Brené Brown Unlocking Us: On My Mind episode that covers RBG, Surge Capacity, and Play as an energy source. My new mini-manifesto is “play sets me free” – inspired by memories of my childhood. So, I loved hearing Sister Brené talk about her take on the surge capacity article mentioned earlier and the power of incorporating more play into our lives as a way to re-source and rejuvenate. I think this topic might be a future Rebel Souls SOULisode…what do you think?
P.S. Brené just announced a partnership with Spotify. Amongst other offerings, every episode now has an accompanying playlist informed by the guest! #podgoals
